Sunday, April 4, 2004 - The Nassau West Department of the Navy has announced that the proposed ship that will patrol the area of the new Capitol facility opening next month will be commissioned as Hull No. 18, and it's name will be the Nassau West Ship (NWS) Alda Becker, in honor of Nassau West President Kelly K. Bartram's recently-deceased maternal grandmother, who died in late January of this year at the age of 91. Her memorial service, which the President was unable to attend, was held today in Medfield, Massachusetts.

The Alda Becker will be the newest in a series of late-model ships to hit the world's harbors and shipyards. It is to be a small carrier, and will be assigned as a mobile air force base near the Capitol. The shipbuilders are confined by space, though, as there are no large bodies of water for many miles around the Capitol.

So, designers have decided to create a small carrier. This is quite a departure from the average aircraft carrier with its huge dimensions. The new ship will be in service by the end of 2004, or so says the Department of Defense. Hopefully this ship will remain in service for many years to come. In the past eight years, the Nassau West Navy has lost as many ships. Of those, the KKB, was recommissioned and given the new hull number of 17.

As a result of recent terror threats to the KKB, its current status is classified. The only public mention of the ship is that it is, indeed, still in service, and not sunk as previously believed. The Independence was the actual victim of the sinking reported last year. The entire crew was killed in an engine room explosion in August, and the ship was scuttled on Sunday, October 12, 2003.
