It's Time to Quit - Drinking!

On Monday, April 20, 2009, Nassau West President Kelly K. Bartram requested assistance from the Nassau West Department of Health and Human Services regarding his recently-admitted alcoholism.

While we are aware that it took a lot for him to take this very important first step, we also realize that it will take a lot more than that to succeed in his quest to be free from the addiction and resume a healthy lifestyle. This will take more than just alcohol cessation, but as Alcoholics Anonymous says, "One Day at a Time."

Recently, while intoxicated, President Bartram took up smoking again, which he had quit for nearly a year. Since then, he's smoked for about two months. The annual deadline for quitting smoking is May 1. We hope to have him ready to quit both by that date, which this year is a Friday.

Traditionally, quitting smoking works best on a weekend, away from the pressures encountered at work. However, quitting drinking is not necessarily the best on the weekend. In order to quit one, we believe he'll have to quit both. Contrary to popular belief, while quitting smoking is best done "cold turkey", quitting drinking can be fatal if done that way.

Between now and May 1, a lot of research will be done regarding quitting both addictions. The President will probably be allowed to smoke the entire time, and quit "cold turkey". However, the drinking will be stepped down in stages to prevent illness or injury that could endanger either the cessation or his health and well being.
